Maroons Advance to ODAC Championship With 2-0 Win Over Hampden-Sydney

The Short Story: The Roanoke College men's soccer team advanced to the ODAC Tournament championship game for the first time since 2014 with a 2-0 shutout win over No. 8 seed Hampden-Sydney in the semifinals on Wednesday evening in Salem.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams looked to push the action early with each keeping possession in their attacking third for a few minutes each time. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes with the score staying tied at 0-0 at the half.
  • In the 56th minute, Harrison Kraus took a pass and dribbled a few yards back towards midfield, avoiding a defender, turned and drove to about 10 yards on the left side of the goal and fired a shot all the way across to the right side of the back of the net passed Wills Huddleston of H-SC for the 1-0 lead.
  • At 78:51, Nathan Carey took an attempted header clear off a Maroon corner kick from about 12 yards out on the right side and fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal giving the Maroons a 2-0 lead with an insurance goal with 11:09 left in the game.
  • The Maroons held on the rest of the way for the 2-0 shutout.
BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons dominated the offensive boards maintaining a 23-4 shot lead over the match, including a 14-1 shot lead in the first 45 minutes.
  • Kraus extended his goals to a team-best eight and leads the Maroons in total points with 18 this season.
  • Zach Behe made a save on all three of Hampden-Sydney shots on goal, playing all 90 minutes for the Maroons.
