City of Salem issued the following announcement on Nov. 10
The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a commercial structure fire at 1336 W. Main Street this morning at approximately 6:20 a.m. The MedExpress building sustained significant damage and some other businesses that operate in the Mill Lane Commons shopping area were affected by the smoke.
The first unit arrived within 5 minutes of receiving the 911 call and found heavy smoke coming from the building. It took firefighters 30 minutes to contain the fire and the building suffered serious fire, smoke and water damage. The Salem Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the blaze and has not determined an origin or cause. In addition, a damage estimate has not been set.
Approximately 34 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department (Truck 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Medic 801, Fire Medic 1, Battalion 1, Fire Marshal 1, Fire Marshal 2, Fire 2, Fire 4, Training 1, Fire Medic 800, Rehab Unit), the Roanoke City Fire & EMS (Ladder 5, Engine 13, Battalion 2) and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Departments (Wagon 9, Medic 91) responded and assisted in extinguishing the fire.
