The City of Roanoke and the Gun Violence Prevention Commission are working with Elite Business Strategies to conduct a Gun Violence Community Assessment that will serve to provide community-driven perspectives on the issues surrounding gun violence.
The assessment is being done as a study to capture quantitative data and through community outreach and engagement aimed at capturing information on the lived experiences of community members being impacted by violence - particularly gun violence - to understand the root causes better, thereby helping to prevent and mitigate the effects on the community. The assessment will be completed through direct interviews with community members as well as a survey. The interviews and the survey consist of questions seeking to solicit feedback from parents, community members, community influencers, business owners, and youth service providers on the effects of gun violence on the community and recommendations to make the community safer. Also, interviews and surveys are completely voluntary and anonymous, and respondents will NOT be asked to share any personally identifiable information. In order to reach as many community members as possible, the survey will be available in English, Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese (simplified), and French. The survey can be accessed from cell phones, tablets, and computers. In addition, a QR code is provided to take respondents directly to the consent form from which a prompt to select survey only, interview, or both will display. If "survey only" is selected, respondents will receive the survey link via email or phone. If an interview is selected, respondents will be contacted to schedule an interview at their convenience via phone, in person, or via video. If both are selected, both actions will occur.
