The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team's comeback in the eighth and ninth inning fell just short in game one of a two-game series with No. 16 Johns Hopkins on the road, 6-5.

Highlights:

  • JHU scored five runs on six hits to jump out to a 5-0 lead after just one inning against the Maroons. The Blue Jays would add another run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • Corey Coogan led off the top of the eighth with a single and Trevor Moore followed with a single to right to put runners on first and second. Both runners would steal their next base after the Blue Jays collected an out. Caleb Grizzard then hit a ball to shallow centerfield that allowed Moore to reach third and Coogan to score to cut into the Blue Jay lead. Now with two outs and the bases loaded. Jonny Wall, with two outs, singled to deep right field that saw both Moore and Grizzard score and Mason Staz reach third to cut the lead down to 6-3. Conner Butler followed up with a double to right that allowed Staz to score, trimming the lead down to just two runs.
  • Coogan led off the top of the ninth as well, this time with a walk, and reach second on an error by the first baseman. Jacob Bonzon hit a single to center that allowed Coogan to score and pinch-runner Jack Fehlner to take second, cutting the JHU lead to one. The Blue Jays struck out the final batter to escape with the 6-5 win over the Maroons.
