Fightin' Engineers Hand Ferrum 13-12 Baseball Loss

 Ferrum College's baseball team dropped its first game of the Piedmont Spring Break Tournament, falling 13-12 to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology this afternoon at Piedmont University's Loudermilk Field.

THE BASICS
Nick Funk's sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first inning spotted Ferrum a 1-0 lead. Rose-Hulman exploded for six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead after two. Funk had an RBI single in the third inning, followed by an Elijah Byrd sacrifice fly to center to trim the lead to 6-3.

The Panthers scored four runs in the fourth inning, including one on Grayson Chitwood's RBI double, to take a 7-6 lead after four. The Fightin' Engineers came back to score four in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth to take a 13-7 lead.

In the bottom the ninth inning, the Panthers got a run off Enrique Diaz's RBI single, another when Jaden Johnson was struck by pitch with the bases loaded, a third when Ozzie Torres reached on a fielder's choice, and two more on RBI singles by Chitwood and Funk before Rose-Hulman was able to close it out.

NEXT UP
Coach Ryan Brittle's team will face host Piedmont Sunday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. at Loudermilk Field to close out the tournament.
