Hall, Smith Claim Titles as Maroons Finish Runner-Up at Blue Jay Classic

The Roanoke wrestling team finished runner-up at the 2022 Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown. The Maroons finished with 168 points, just four shy the host Blue Jays (172) for the title. Sean Hall won the title at 133 lbs. with teammate Dustin Smith claiming the win at 141 lbs.Full Roanoke Results

RC highlights:

  • 125 lbs. – Two Maroons placed at this weight class with Mac Cafurello falling in the title match. Jude Robson was fourth after picking up a decision, tech. fall, and a pin.
  • 133 lbs. – Sean Hall won his second-straight title of the season after running the gauntlet at 133 lbs. He won with a pair of falls, a major decision, and a tech. fall over fellow Maroon Corey Messick, who placed second, in the final.
  • 141 lbs. – Dustin Smith moved up one spot on the podium from the Star City Classic by claiming the title at 141 lbs. a tech. fall and a pair of falls, including in the final saw him with his first career title. Nick Kauffman wrestled six matches on the day to also find a spot on the podium with a 4th place finish.
  • 149 lbs. – Jarrod Pominville was fourth for Roanoke at 149 lbs. after going 3-2 on the day, including a major decision in the second round.
  • 157 lbs. – Ryan Foutz reached the title match at 157 lbs. with a major decision, fall, and two decisions, but dropped championship to the host Blue Jays.
  • 165 lbs. – David Reid fell in the title match at 165 lbs. after reaching the penultimate match of the weight class with an injury default, decision, and a fall, to finish runner-up.
  • 197 lbs. – Cam Cavins also wrestled in six matches on the day, to finish fourth at 197 lbs. He ended up with four decision wins on the day.
  • Hwt. – Joshua Mancia won his third-place match at heavyweight after reaching the final thanks to two falls and two decisions.
