Hollins University announced Friday that Richie Waggoner has been named HU's new Director of Athletic Communications.
Waggoner returns to HU after a working in the athletic communications office at his alma mater Roanoke College since June of 2019. Waggoner, who also serves as RC's men's golf coach will join the Green and Gold on August 1.
No stranger to HU, Waggoner was named head basketball coach, sports information director, and instructor of physical education at Hollins in the fall of 2006. He stepped down from basketball following the 2009-10 season to build the university's sports information office. Waggoner was the Sports Information Director, NCAA Compliance Coordinator, and an Instructor of Physical Education until June of 2019.
"I could not be more excited to welcome Richie back to the Green and Gold family," said Director of Athletics Chris Kilcoyne. "Richie's passion for Hollins, the ODAC and Division III as whole will prove invaluable as we look to tell the stories of our student-athletes and athletic programs."
During his 14 years at Hollins, Waggoner built the Sports Information office, created and launched a new athletics website, and instituted video webcasting for the four, Hollins team sports. Beginning at the start of the 2014-15 school year, he was named NCAA Compliance Coordinator as well as taking over the duties of sending and receiving game contracts, and has served on several search committees for the department. In the spring of 2018, Waggoner stepped in to serve as interim head tennis coach.
Waggoner previously served as an Assistant Women's Basketball at Roanoke, helping RC Hall of Famer Susan Dunagan lead the Maroons to seven ODAC Championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances which included one Elite Eight and one Sweet Sixteen.
Waggoner has worked for more than 30 years within the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) as a coach and administrator, including over a decade as the color commentator for the ODAC women's basketball tournament while adding the men's tournament duties in 2015, play by play for the ODAC Volleyball Tournament, and assisted in numerous other conference events. On the national level, Richie has worked the NCAA DIII softball Super Regionals, DII National Softball Championships, DII NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, DIII Men's and Women's Soccer Final Four, DIII Women's Lacrosse Final Four,, and served as the site supervisor for the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball Tournament. Prior to coming to Hollins, he completed a six-year stint as head women's basketball coach at Lynchburg College.
Other career highlights include serving as an assistant girls' basketball coach at Roanoke County's Glenvar High School, which won a state championship in 1997.
This past spring, Waggoner led Roanoke to its highest finish at the ODAC Championships in over a decade as the Maroons placed third overall as a team.
