Shenandoah Slips by Hollins 46-43

Hollins University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 29

The Basics

Score: Shenandoah 46, Hollins 43

Records: Hollins 7-7 / 3-6 ODAC | Shenandoah 11-4 / 5-2 ODAC

Location: Roanoke, Va.

The Lead: Shenandoah slipped by Hollins 46-43 Saturday afternoon in ODAC Women's Basketball action in Roanoke.

Highlights:

  • Shenandoah scored the first 14 points of the game before back-to-back baskets by Tia Tucker in the final minute of the first quarter made it a 14-4 game.
  • HU scored 10 of the first 14 points in the second quarter with a bucket by Tucker cutting the SU lead to 18-14 with 7:25 to go in the half.
  • With just over two minutes to play, SU led by nine, but Hollins again rallied, scoring six straight points with two free-throws by Kayla Surles making it 25-22 with under a minute to go.
  • The Hornets led 26-22 at halftime and score the first four points of the third quarter to extend their lead back up to eight points.
  • Hollins responded with an 11-3 run, tying the game at 35 on a pair of Surles makes from the free-throw line with under a minute to go in the third.
  • A free-throw in the closing seconds helped SU to a 36-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Two free-throws by Xavia Hahn on the opening possession gave HU its first lead of the game.
  • Madisen Kimble made one-of-two free-throws with just over two minutes to play to put SU out in front 44-43.
  • Hollins had five chances to tie or take the lead down the stretch, but could not convert and Sierra St. Cyr knocked down a pair of key free-throws with three seconds left for Shenandoah.
  • Tucker paced Hollins with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Surles had a game-high 18 points.
  • Raegan Johnson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for SU.
