The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the population of older adults continues to rise as the number of younger individuals declines. Between 2020 and 2024, those age 65 and older grew by 13%, while the under-18 cohort dropped by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the older adult segment grew from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024, according to census figures.
A 2021 analysis indicates almost half of adults over 65—around 28 million—may need long-term services and supports, with more than a third possibly requiring nursing home care at some point.
