David Suetterlein, a Virginia state senator, recently used his social media platform to highlight local sports achievements and express gratitude to community members involved in organizing athletic events. In a series of posts on September 20 and 21, Suetterlein acknowledged notable victories by area teams and athletes.
On September 20, Suetterlein congratulated the Patrick Henry team for their performance at a longstanding Roanoke event: “Congratulations Patrick Henry on a 14-2 victory in the hotly contested 33rd Noel C. Taylor Classic! Thank you @RoanokeSchools, @roanokepolice and everyone that worked this week so a sell out crowd could enjoy a favorite Star City tradition!” The Noel C. Taylor Classic is an annual football game held in Roanoke, Virginia, named after the city’s first Black mayor. It is considered an important local sporting tradition and draws significant community involvement each year.
Later that day, he recognized another accomplishment: “Congratulations Coach Hunter Shepherd and Cave Spring on a huge 47-8 Homecoming victory!” Cave Spring High School’s football team has had a history of competitive seasons within the region.
The following morning, Suetterlein turned his attention to college athletics with praise for former Cave Spring athlete Owen Sweeney: “Another week, another two NCAA TDs for Cave Spring’s @ocsweeney at @VMI1839. Scored on a 75 yard reception and then after a three hour lightning suspension, he scored on a 20 yard reception. 6 TDs in 4 weeks!” Sweeney currently plays football at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), which competes in NCAA Division I FCS.
These messages from Suetterlein reflect both support for youth sports and recognition of efforts by local organizations such as Roanoke City Public Schools and the Roanoke Police Department—key contributors to regional athletic events.
