The City of Roanoke proudly announces that it has earned the highest possible score of 100 points on the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) 2023 Municipal Equality Index (MEI), an annual assessment that evaluates cities nationwide on their inclusivity towards LGBTQ+ individuals. This marks Roanoke’s exceptional commitment to fostering an environment of equality and acceptance.

The MEI, now in its twelfth year, meticulously rates 506 cities across the United States on 49 distinct criteria, encompassing non-discrimination laws, municipal employment practices, city services, law enforcement policies, and leadership in promoting LGBTQ+ equality. Roanoke’s performance has earned it the highest score possible, joining a record-breaking 129 cities, which make up over 25 percent of all surveyed municipalities that achieved a perfect score this year.

More information about the MEI can be found on the Human Rights Campaign website at https://www.hrc.org/resources/municipal-equality-index.
